All schools have a set of skills and dispositions which they hope to foster in students. These transdisciplinary outcomes include collaboration, critical thinking and communication, amongst others. However, these skills are not easily measured through traditional assessment approaches. As a result, we gain a clear picture of the facts and knowledge attained by students through a unit of study, but we have a less clear picture of their growth in important skills which can be applied across the curriculum, and in their daily lives. In this session we will begin by reviewing the principles of effective assessment. Next, we will identify and define transdisciplinary learning skills. We will then develop performance tasks which will measure student competency in both disciplinary and transdisciplinary outcomes for a unit of study. Finally, we will explore continuua and rubrics which will aid in interpreting and reporting the outcomes of these performance tasks. By the end of the session, participants will have a clear framework for developing assessment measures which encompass both disciplinary and transdisciplinary outcomes.
